Outboard motors, like most combustion engines, get really hot—and they require cooling. An outboard motor works by combining air and fuel into a cylinder, pressurizing it with a piston, and using a spark plug to ignite that air and fuel combo to create a small contained combustion that drives the piston back down. This happens over and over, and all of those small explosions—as well as the friction created by the many metal pieces moving against each other, creates an intense amount of heat. Left unchecked, that heat would cause the many parts to superheat and eventually fold under the pressure. Water pumps for boat motors run water up from the body of water, through the engine to keep things cool, and spit it back out into the water behind the boat. Water pumps for boat motors can come in either whole pieces or kits to replace or rebuild one should something go wrong. Additionally, water pumps for boats can get clogged easily by mud or other debris as it’s sucked up. Insects are also known to build mud nests inside water pump exhaust tubes.
